Welcome to the Learning Hub!

A space where I explore the intersection between business, capitalism, and liberation.

what can we do to shape the future?

This is a question many of us are grappling with right now. After all, we all want to make the world a better place. But… how?

It’s what I think about every day.

To answer this question, I believe we need to have an understanding of the present. What are the problems we’re facing today?

It’s not enough to look at these problems through a vacuum, however. Nuance comes from understanding how we got here in the first place. We need context. We need to understand the past.

We will also need to engage our imaginations. We need to allow ourselves to dream of the world we would like to see.

One thing is for sure: we can’t continue on without changing how we exist in this world. We are facing an existential crisis in more ways than one.

But there is hope. There are other ways of being.

They have been practiced by people in the past. They are being practiced by people now. And they are being practiced in our minds.

There’s so much nuance here. So much to learn. So much to discuss. So much information to work through and synthesize. It’s a lot.

My goal is to hold space for more thought and conversation around this. I’m using this corner of my website to curate knowledge and share any insights I have around how we can shape the future.

this is an exercise in doing things differently.

I’ve studied business, marketing, and capitalism for many years now. I’ve thought about these topics in relation to social justice, sustainability… anything pertaining to how we can work towards our collective liberation.

I’ve wanted to speak on what I’ve researched and learned for a while now.

I was never sure how to do it though.

I didn’t want to position myself as a “thought leader,” which we are taught to do. To write a book. To create a course.

It felt wrong. It didn’t feel in alignment with the message.

I wanted to do things differently.

The Learning Hub is a resource. It’s also a place where I can play around with synthesizing what I know about business, capitalism, and liberation into new ideas.

It’s curation. It’s public learning. It’s an experiment.

I want to acknowledge what I know, and what I do not.

I want to celebrate the act of learning. There is no shame in not knowing. There is no shame in realizing we were wrong, or changing our minds about something.

Learning is a lifelong journey. We will never know everything, but that shouldn’t stop us from taking in new information, whether it proves us wrong or right.

These pages will be evergreen, updated as I learn and grow.

I invite you to learn with me.

The seeds of this project first took root with the guidance and support of my BFTP Incubator Circle, Toi, Sista Zai, and Althea. The idea was further nourished under the care of a lovely BFTP thought partnership circle in January 2022. Thank you to all involved!

start here…

A lot of people believe that business and capitalism go hand in hand, that you can’t have one without the other. This is a persistent myth that I’d like to address. What is business?

What is the real dynamic between capitalism and businesses?

As a business owner, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to do things “right.” What does that mean, and how do we do that?

Capitalism. It’s at the very center of our culture wars. Some believe it’s the “best we’ve got” and will defend it to death. Others identify it as the root of all evil.

It’s worth taking a deeper look into what capitalism is. How did it become the dominant economic system in our world today? Why does it persist today?

And are there alternatives?

We’re fighting for so many things in our society. Racial and gender equality. Disability rights. LGBTQ+ rights. Economic justice. Living sustainably and in harmony with the environment. What is this all for?

What does collective liberation mean? How will we get there?
